About Robert Black

I am a Midwest person who recently moved to my home in St Augustine from Seattle. I have worked and lived in many places in USA as well as attended school in Paris, France. My career has been in the field of chemistry, developing and marketing intermediates since 1985. The recession in 2008 forced me to start my own business to care for family. I used skill in large scale applications learned in the corporate world to fill spaces overlooked by larger corporations like my former employer. Change creates opportunity if we keep our eyes open and stay positive!

Working on my own in such a large pool is both an advantage and disadvantage; where it is a disadvantage, I support other firms to help them achieve the business. Firms like Murray Energy, Peabody, Signal Peak Energy, Foresight Energy, Benjamin Moore, Valspar, True Value, and many others have used various forms of chemical technology I introduced them to throughout my years as an entrepreneur.

I met my beautiful and talented wife in Seattle and her name is Michiko. She is a former headliner in the Tokyo Ballet and former actress in Tokyo. We met in a restaurant bar in Seattle many years ago; she is the star in our household. Together we owned for many years in Seattle a ballet studio where she taught classical ballet. Through this experience of owning this school, I witnessed a curriculum of the arts that built character. I learned what she already knew intimately that arts, particularly dance, is a discipline that builds confidence and character for those willing to put in the work, to stick with it when it becomes too tough. It was very expensive, but incredibly rewarding, to watch the growth of those learning at our studio.

Michiko took-up a love for Ballroom dance years ago in Seattle; but she has trained under Alex and Ekaterina while we visited my mother who lives in Ponte Vedra Beach. Now that we live here, they have become her teachers and mentors in this exciting form of dance. Very recently, Michiko asked me to attend her class with Alex because Ekaterina had a “very important business question” to ask me. Well, I’m honored to try to help, so I do. We arrive, Michiko slips away to “warm up,” and Ekaterina produces documents of this contest requesting that I participate. I was confused…I don’t dance, and I’m not a star! Nobody here knows us and…by the way, didn’t I marry a star? Why isn’t she doing it? I was sweating!! Ekaterina calmed me down and explained in a kind way that it is the dance ignorant that makes the competition through development. She needs a lump of clay to create something for this event; she was kind and positive; how could I say NO?

Meeting Kathy Wallis was another experience but affirmed what Ekaterina explained. Kathy asks questions very simple for me to answer; Kathy- How long have you been interested in dance? Me- about 36 hours; Kathy- do you have a type of dance particularly interesting to you? Me- No. Kathy- you are perfect, welcome to the competition! So, here I am sharing time with you all to raise funds for the beauty and discipline only the arts afford our culture. By the time you read this and see me I hope to have lost some weight, regained some strength and confidence, and learned from the talented Ekaterina and her husband Alex how to dance as a man should. Thank you for being here and thank you for your support of the arts in Northeast Florida!
