About Avis Chen Boulter

Dr. Avis Chen Boulter was born and raised in Gainesville, FL.  She graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree (Magna Cum Laude) and a Doctor of Medicine degree through the seven year accelerated Junior Honors Program.  Avis did her anesthesia residency at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC and completed two months of pediatric anesthesia training at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in addition to her pediatric anesthesia training at Bowman Gray.  She is board certified in Anesthesiology as well as in Pediatric Anesthesiology. Avis has lived in Jacksonville since 1989 and has practiced medicine for over 28 years at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.  She was a Partner in the Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology at Nemours Children’s Specialty Care and still works there part time as a pediatric anesthesiologist.

Avis started taking ballet when she was 5 years old. During her high school and college days,  she was a soloist with the Gainesville Civic Ballet.  She was a former Miss University of Florida and a top ten finalist at Miss Florida. She has continued dancing ballet throughout the years in Jacksonville and has performed in the Community Nutcracker for over 20 years dancing on pointe there as well as in other local ballets directed by Mark Spivak and Dulce Anaya, including Swan Lake, La Bayadere, Paquita, Don Quixote, and Sleeping Beauty.  Last year, she danced in a music video, “Remember Me,” in which she performed a contemporary dance solo with the musical trio, St John and Friends.  Avis enjoys many dance genres, including ballet, salsa, bachata, Zouk, and Bollywood.  She is thrilled to be learning a new dance genre, Argentine Tango, for this year’s First Coast DWTS! She is a fan of live musical performance, including classical music, jazz, blues, and rock, and of live theater, especially musicals. 

Avis is the proud mother of two.  Her daughter is in her fourth year of residency and is Chief Resident in her Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency in Dallas, TX.  Her daughter has recently become engaged! A couple months ago, her son accepted a new position and moved to NYC!  It is an exciting time in life for both of her children!    

Avis is extremely honored to be participating in the 2022 First Coast Dancing with the Stars!  She is very enthusiastic to raise funds for the Beaches Fine Arts Series!  This year is really special in that it is BFAS’ 50th year of providing its free concert series for the First Coast!  Beaches Fine Arts Series is an amazing asset to our community.  It adds to our quality of life by exposing First Coast residents to free quality musical performances and art, and by providing free musical education for area students! Let’s help BFAS continue its wonderful mission!
